Unlocking the Medicine Chest: Accessing Medical Records at the University of Dundee Archive Services

Archive Services has received funding from The Wellcome Trust, The Pilgrim Trust and The Esmee Fairbairn Foundation to catalogue and preserve its medical archives.

The projects have significantly increased access and have provided a rich research resource. The catalogues and a selection of images can be viewed online by:

  • Academic Researchers
  • Medical Professionals
  • Students
  • Family/Local Historians
  • School Pupils
  • Anyone with an interest in history

The diversity of medical related research themes to be found within the collections is immense and includes history of insanity, tropical medicine, medical missions, surgery, pathology, infectious diseases and the experiences of women in the medical and nursing professions. Detailed patient and staff records provide a treasure chest for a wide range of researchers.

The Collections

  • NHS Tayside (THB)
    Asylums, Hospitals, Boards of Management, Colleges of Nursing etc. in the Tayside area.
  • Dundee Dental Hospital (DDH)
  • Manuscript Collections (MS)
    Other medical collections relating to organisations and individuals held by the University of Dundee Archives.
  • University Records Collection (UR)
    Contains the records of various medical professors and lecturers.
